Summer Reading Program 2014

June 9 to August 16, 2014

Yakima Valley Libraries invites children and teens to register for our FREE Summer Reading Program! More information to come soon. Keep checking back!

Fizz, Boom, Read! 2014 Summer Reading Program is here!


When you sign up for the program, you can:
  • Earn incentives for reading
  • Enjoy stories, games and crafts at your local library
  • Attend special summer events
  • Receive a book for finishing the program
Join us while we explore the fun things that make reading a blast! Fizz, Boom, Read!

THERE ARE TWO FUN WAYS TO PARTICIPATE:

Kids ProgramFor: Pre-K through 4th graders

  • Sign up for Summer Reading at your local library.
  • You'll receive a tracking sheet to record your summer reading progress, and earn incentives for every five days you read (or are read to) for at least 20 minutes.
  • Earn a book after completing 20 days of reading! (While supplies last).

Tween/Teen Program For: 5th through 8th graders (Older teens are welcome to participate, too.)

  • Sign up for Summer Reading at your local library to get your reading log.
  • During summer, use your log to track titles of each chapter book you read.
  • When you've read 10 books, bring the reading log back to your library to receive a book. (While supplies last).

The Caterpillar Hunter

The Traveling Lantern Theatre Company of Portland, Oregon will present The Caterpillar Hunter, a fast-pace, funny and interactive program based on the beloved character of the late Steve Irwin.

I Dig Dinosaurs Puppet Show

Professional puppeteer, Jason Ropp and the Dragon Theater Puppets of Portland, Oregon will present a fabulously entertaining and informative show about dinosaurs, including some real fossils.

Summer Reading Comic Strip Contest

Kids and teens: Are you an artist? Or do you have a funny story to tell? Then, dig up some laughs and enter the comic strip contest at the Yakima Central and West Valley Libraries!

  • Contest is open to children and teens (18 years old or younger).
  • Submissions must fit onto an 8"x11" or 11"x14" piece of paper.
  • The comic can have as few or as many frames as you like. It can also be a single drawing. (Templates are available for those who would like one).
  • A narrative or story of some kind is required. Use thought bubbles, voice bubbles, text along the bottom, etc.
  • Submissions are accepted starting Monday, July 1 and due Saturday, August 3, 2013.
  • Voting begins August 5th and closes Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 12pm.
  • Winners announced Saturday, August 10, 2013 at 1pm.
  • Winner will receive a ribbon, a prize, and have their comic strip featured on the Yakima Valley Libraries website.

'Dig Into Art' Contest

The Yakima Central and West Valley Libraries want to see what your inner artist can dig up. This summer, we're asking patrons of all ages to make the old new again, by creating a piece of art using recycled or repurposed materials.

  • Contest is open to everyone, with separate categories by age group:
    • Kids: Pre-K to 5th grade
    • Tweens: 6th -8th grade
    • Tweens: 9th -12th grade
    • Adults: Over 18 years old
