2024 Summer Events & Activities


    From story walks in the Yakima Area Arboretum to science demonstrations with OMSI to Australian animal encounters, we have a variety of activities planned for our community’s youth this summer! Kids, teens, and families, join us for some entertaining adventures during the Summer Reading Program. See the complete list of events outlined below.

    2024 Time Capsule Celebrations

    Join us to create a modern Time Capsule and celebrate YVL’s 80 years of library service! Libraries across the district will host events, where attendees are invited to write a letter to the future, enjoy crafts, and embark on a scavenger hunt. Community members are also invited to fill the 2024 Time Capsule with items that represent our community in the present time.

    Balloon Lab

    Learn the art of twisting balloon figures in a step-by-step tutorial! All materials will be provided. Best for ages 8+.

    Virtual Reality Adventure

    Experience and explore the world with our virtual reality headsets! Join us as we go on a roller coaster ride, get kissed by a gorilla, see the Aurora Borealis and play a round of I Spy–all with VR! Registration is recommended. Best for ages 12+.

    OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science & Industry)

    Adventure alongside incredible science demonstrations presented by educators from the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry. Join us for three interactive and informative events outlined below!

    Motion Commotion (best for ages 4+)
    Entertaining demonstrations that will make physics incredibly easy to understand. Topics include energy conversions, forces, inertia and laws of motion.

    Kiddie Chemistry (best for ages 4+)
    An introduction to basic chemistry, where young students will study mixtures and chemical reactions involving changes in color, temperature and states of matter.

    Roller Coaster Madness (best for ages 7+)
    A wild ride, where students design and test their own marble coaster, complete with loops and jumps. Topics include engineering, design, and physics.

    The Great Friends & Family Puzzle Race

    Gather your teams of 3-5 participants and compete in a race to see which team can finish their 400-piece puzzle the fastest! Best for ages 7+. Registration is required.

    StoryWalk @ the Arboretum

    Get ready to laugh during this kid-friendly comedy show that is sure to entertain adults as well! Angel Ocasio is a seasoned comedy and music entertainer who studied at Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College. Fun for all ages.

    Alex Zerbe Comedy Show

    Be prepared to laugh your socks off at THE Professional Zaniac and two-time Guinness World Record holder, Alex Zerbe. A comedy performer, juggler, and magician, The Zaniac has some exciting performances planned for Library patrons. Best for ages 12 years and younger.
