Dr. Carla Hayden and Congressman Dan Newhouse
Yakima, WA – What’s better than celebrating Harry Potter’s birthday? Getting to celebrate along with Dr. Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress!
On Wednesday, July 31, Yakima Valley Libraries is pleased to welcome Hayden at Yakima Central Library as she visits our Congressional District, hosted by Congressman Dan Newhouse.
Hayden was sworn in as Librarian of Congress in 2016, becoming the first woman and the first African American to lead the national library. In addition to these achievements, in 1995, she was the first African American to receive Library Journal’s prestigious “Librarian of the Year” Award. She is also the former CEO of the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, was nominated by President Obama to be a member of the National Museum and Library Services Board, and served as president of the American Library Association from 2003 to 2004.
On Wednesday, July 31, in addition to activities planned by the office of Congressman Newhouse, both Dr. Hayden and the Congressman will participate in a Harry Potter-themed read-aloud, followed by crafts and activities. This event is open to the public and begins at 11am. Additional Harry Potter activities will be hosted by library staff at the Yakima Central Library, 102 N. Third Street, on a drop-in basis, from 3pm – 6pm on Wednesday, July 31
